Your Literacy Connection Westshore's purpose is to identify the learning needs of the Westshore area -including Colwood, Langford, Metchosin and the Highlands - and respond to these by working with others to coordinate and support literacy programs and services. We are focused on bringing an awareness to the value of life-long learning and the sense of empowerment and growth this brings.
How we do this
- By bringing people in the community together to share ideas, resources and experience that builds on existing literacy programs and looks to create new initiatives;
- By improving access to learning opportunities in the community;
- By providing opportunities for the community to improve their own literacy and life-long learning capacities through information sharing, community events, discussions, story sharing and programs; and,
- By refering to the Westshore Literacy Plan, which you helped create, to guide and direct the areas of focus needing attention.
Some examples of the work we do in the community includes simply talking about what literacy is, how it is embedded in every aspect of our lives and what ways it impacts each of us. We provide on-going support to existing literacy programs in the form of financial, coordination and promotional support. We also supply gently used books to individuals and organizations for use in their programs. Other times we connect people to resources in the community, research community literacy needs and always look for ways to build community connections.
