Come out and celebrate Family Literacy Day 2013 in the Westshore! Your Literacy Connection Westshore, Decoda Literacy Solutions, ABC Life Literacy Canada and the Municipalities of Colwood and Highlands have proclaimed January 27th Family Literacy Day! The Municipality of Langford has also donated the Langford Trolley for the afternoon so families can experience and enjoy the many free, fun-filled learning activities throughout the Westshore Communities. Learning can happen anywhere so on January 27th between 1:00 - 3:00pm, visit one or all of the participating businesses and organizations with your family to enjoy an afternoon of fun, learning together! The benefits of families dedicating time together on a daily basis, whether reading and writing, playing and exercising, or simply talking about their day, are far-reaching to everyone. Tales from the Puppet Booth - Puppet Show . 1000 x 5 Book Recycling Program
Travel to the world of folklore and storybooks and experience the magic of puppet theatre as performed by The Puppet Booth. For young children and their families. While you’re here, pick up a free 1000 x 5 gift bag of books for your family to read at home
THE READ SOCIETY . Westshore Town Centre . 2945 Jacklin Rd . 1-4pm
The folks from The READ Society are ready to play some games! Join them for a little word bingo, Readers Theatre and good old fashioned board games. The whole family shouldn’t have much trouble finding something to read that is noisy and fits into an afternoon at the mall! Stop by to play games and you can enter your name into a draw for one of four free books.
PACIFIC CENTRE FAMILY SERVICES ASSOCIATION . 345 Whale Rd
1-2pm - ‘Mini’ Books for Breakfast. Enjoy one hour in the early years room while the folks from Books for Breakfast lead families through a story or two and some songs, all while enjoying a healthy snack.
2-3pm - ‘Take apart’ learning station . Book Walk . Free Play. A table will be set up and filled with small appliances for you and your family to dissect, take apart and investigate! Or, you can enjoy a Book walk and / or some free play in the early years room.
SOOKE FAMILY RESOURCE SOCIETY . Family Resource Centre . 2764 Jacklin Road . 1-3pm
Enjoy a Parent and Tot Drop-In afternoon at the Family Resource Centre and watch your child learn and grow. There will be some structured play experiences, art, and circle time as well as a yummy snack.
ORIGIN BAKERY . 110-1790 Island Highway . 1-2pm
Visit the newest gluten-free bakery in Colwood and learn how to bake chocolate ginger chews from the experts! Space is limited so please pre-register for this activity by emailing: email@example.com indicating the total number of family members attending. Ages 4+
GOLDSTREAM NATURE HOUSE . Trans Canada Highway . 1-3pm
The naturalists at the nature house will be reading the interactive ‘Salmon Storybook’, a story about the lifecycle and journey of the Chum salmon returning to the Goldstream River to spawn. You can also visit the Children’s reading corner or check out the bargain book section.
BROKEN PADDLE COFFEEHOUSE . 4480 Happy Valley Rd. Metchosin . 1-3pm
Dig into the colourful papers, markers, pens and stationary with local sculptor and painter Leslie Forman while you write (or draw) a letter to someone you care about. Finish it off with a stamp and pop it in the mail!
OOH LA LA CUPCAKES . 713 Goldstream Ave. Unit A . 1-3pm
The first 60 people to come in and tell us they are part of the learning tour recieve a custom-made mini cupcake!

Tables will be set up for you to bring your family by to play a board game, puzzle or card game. While you’re here, why not try out a signature Starbucks beverage!

Pop in to browse the learning toy section and grab a '15 minutes of Fun' activity sheet to work away on while you ride the trolley to your next location!
Jump on and off the Langford Trolley between 1-3pm on Sunday, January 27th. 2013.

The Langford Trolley will start the tour at 1pm at the Westshore Mall and run three times within the hour until 3pm. The last trolley of the day will return to the Westshore Mall. Location: Westshore Mall (trolley stop outside A&W doors)
The trolley will continue onto Jacklin Road and up to Goldstream Avenue towards the Juan de Fuca Library and onto the View Royal Serious Coffee. There will be a number of stops along the way to accommodate most locations on the tour.
Help yourself to a complimentary book to read with your family while riding the trolley to your next stop! (And feel free to take it home with you afterwards)

Family Literacy Day Celebration Ideas:
1. Create your own comic strip about your family.
2. Invent two new endings to your favorite book.
3. Make up a new recipe together and post it online.
4. Tell knock-knock jokes together while doing the dishes.
5. Sing five songs really, really loud!
6. Invent a new game while playing at the park.
7. Read a story to your pet (or favorite toy).
8. Make a paper fortune teller with eight fortunes.
9. Write a silly poem and tell it to your family at dinner.
10. Log on to your favorite word game - can you beat your best score?
11. Create your family tree.
12. Play rhyming "I Spy" - "I spy something that rhymes with..."
